‘Freedom
is Only a Thought Away’
"Stewart
Kunaka’s poetry is an excellent read. To the non-African
reader, it is an eye-opener and to the African, it is a journey
of reanalysing oneself.
He
highlights remnants of colonialism in African society, as evident
by the abandonment of traditional culture (Pasichigare). In his
poignant ‘Mother Tongue’ he shows how English is given
more importance than native languages. The contrast of modern
religion (Christianity) versus traditional beliefs brings to life
the identity crisis faced by some in the thought-provoking ‘Fighting
for God’.
Kunaka’s
joy of discovery through thoughtful and expressive writing reveals
that freedom really is only a thought away."
